Laura Wolvaardt, who assumed temporary captaincy for
the series against Pakistan and New Zealand earlier this year, is expected to
be officially named South Africa’s regular captain.
Wolvaardt stated she wanted to see how the leadership
would affect her batting when she accepted the position on an interim basis,
but after dominating the run-chart in the T20 series against Pakistan and
placing second in the ODIs against New Zealand, she has decided she wants the
position full-time.
The announcement of Wolvaardt’s appointment is
anticipated to occur prior to South Africa’s upcoming domestic match against
Bangladesh in December. The T20 World Cup final this year was overseen by
Hilton Moreeng, who has been leading the team since 2012. That series will also
be the last one for the current coaching staff. Moreeng’s contract expired at
the end of the competition, but CSA took a long time to post a job opening, and
in August, in spite of player complaints, his term was extended until the end
of 2023.
Since then, interviews have been held and the position
of coach has been advertised; a new coach will be named before to South
Africa’s trip of Australia early in the following year.
“We had interviews last week and we are still
finalising a couple of things. As soon as we are done with the post-interview
process, we will be able to make an announcement,” Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s
director of cricket, said in Ahmedabad, where he is attending the men’s ODI
World Cup. “The current coaching team will carry on until the end of
December, but we want to give clarity as soon as possible because it will
impact the Australian tour.”
