Cricket South Africa
has released their squad for the 2024–25 season, and Nandre Burger and Tony de
Zorzi have earned their maiden national contracts while Andile Phehlukwayo has
rejoined the national team.
The list of 20 players has been whittled down to 18 for the upcoming season
with the removal of Dean Elgar (retired), Quinton de Kock, Sisanda Magala,
Wayne Parnell, and Keegan Petersen.
De Kock, who left
50-over cricket after the World Cup last year but stated at the time that he
would still be eligible to play in T20 events this year, is the most remarkable
of those omissions. De Kock chose to participate in the Big Bash League, where he
performed poorly, rather than participating in South Africa’s three-match
series against India. After returning home to a marginally improved SA20, where
he hit 213 runs in 12 innings, including one fifty, he scored 104 runs in six
innings with a top score of thirty.
With the exception
of David Miller, who was getting married, all other nationally contracted
players were required to participate in the first few rounds of the CSA
domestic T20 challenge. De Kock, who is currently playing in the IPL with the
Lucknow Super Giants, was granted time off for personal reasons. ESPNcricinfo
is aware that there is some uncertainty surrounding his status for the T20
World Cup.
