[Saba Sports News] Former England captain Michael Vaughan berated India skipper Rohit Sharma, calling his captaincy ‘average’ and ‘reactive.’
India lost the series-opener to England in Hyderabad despite taking a 190-run lead by the end of the first innings. The visitors made a rebounding comeback as Ollie Pope’s 196 and Tom Hartley’s seven wicket-haul gave them a 28-run victory and 1-0 lead in the series.
Vaughan did not mince his words in Rohit’s criticism, even saying that India would have not lost the Test match had Virat Kohli been their captain.
“They missed Virat Kohli’s captaincy massively in Test cricket. Under Virat’s captaincy that week, India wouldn’t have lost the game,” Vaughan said as quoted on Club Prairie Fire podcast.
“Rohit is a legend and a great player. But I felt he just switched off completely. I thought Rohit Sharma’s captaincy was very, very average. I thought he was so reactive, I don’t think he maneuvered his field or was proactive with his bowling changes,” he added.
Notably, Kohli pulled out of the first two Tests due to personal reasons and is expected to join the team from the third match. The second Test will commence on February 2 in Visakhapatnam.
