[Saba Sports News] Russell Westbrook’s stint with the Lakers was tumultuous, sparking debates over who was responsible for the team’s struggles. On the ‘OGs’ podcast, ex-NBA player Quentin Richardson offered a candid perspective on Westbrook’s time in Los Angeles, pointing fingers at Lakers fans for unfairly targeting Westbrook.
Richardson highlighted Westbrook’s selflessness, especially his willingness to come off the bench, as evidence of his commitment to the team. Despite this, Richardson feels Westbrook was unjustly criticized, saying, “He’s showing that he’s for the team… Why didn’t he get shined more on? They was too busy trying to dog my G out…”
While acknowledging Westbrook’s fit with the Lakers wasn’t ideal, Richardson believes the backlash against Westbrook overshadows what he describes as the biggest blot on the LeBron James era in Los Angeles.
In 2021, Westbrook joined the Lakers after stints with the Rockets and Wizards, amidst high expectations. However, early signs indicated a rocky path ahead. As the Lakers struggled, Westbrook bore the brunt of fans’ and analysts’ criticism. The Lakers attempted a turnaround by appointing Darvin Ham, a coach favorable to Westbrook’s style, but the team’s poor start in the 2022-23 season only intensified the negativity towards Westbrook.
Westbrook faced harsh criticism online, and he disclosed receiving death threats, illustrating the extreme hostility during his tenure. By the time of his trade in February, Westbrook’s presence was metaphorically likened to a “vampire,” draining the team’s vitality. Richardson’s comments shed light on the harsh scrutiny Westbrook endured, suggesting a misalignment of expectations and reality in his Lakers journey.
