[Saba Sports News] England pacer Jofra Archer is eyeing a comeback in the T20 World Cup 2024.
England Director of Cricket Rob Key provided on update on Archer’s recovery status, confirming that they are hopeful of his return in the upcoming World Cup.
For the unversed, Archer’s career has been hit with a numerous injuries lately. He first sustained a stress fracture in his right elbow in early 2020. In January 2021, he injured his hand in a freak accident.
In May 2021, a surgery was done on his elbow. He returns to the field but again experiences discomfort, taking another hiatus from cricket.
A lower-back stress fracture delayed his comeback but after finally returning to international cricket in January 2023, he complained of issues while playing in the IPL 2023 and went back to rehabilitation.
As it seems, Archer is on the verge of donning the England jersey. He was ready to play in the IPL 2024 but England are not taking any chances with him this time, as revealed by Key.
“Our plan is the T20 World Cup, building him up slowly. He (Archer) wanted to play in the IPL, but we said not this time. Hopefully, the years he has missed, he can add to the end of his career. He is such a talent,” Key said as quoted on BBC’s Tailenders Podcast.
Archer recently played for his school team. Key, who watched him bowl, felt like he was never away.
“I saw him bowl in the Caribbean, and it was like he’d never been away. I don’t want to get back to this thing where he plays and then goes down again,” Key added.
T20 World Cup 2024 will start on June 1. England will begin their campaign on June 4 versus Scotland in Barbados.
