Grant Bradburn’s short career as the head coach of the
Pakistan men’s team officially ends next month when he signs a three-year
contract to take on a head coaching role at Glamorgan.
After replacing Saqlain Mushtaq as captain of the New
Zealand and Sri Lanka Test series, Bradburn also oversaw the 50-over World Cup
in India. He collaborated with Mickey Arthur, who balanced a part-time job as
Pakistan’s squad director with his post as coach of Derbyshire.
Bradburn and Arthur were both out of options after
Pakistan was eliminated from the World Cup before it could go to the
semifinals. While Mohammad Hafeez led the squad during their recent Test tour
of Australia, neither Arthur nor Bradburn travelled with the team since the
PCB’s temporary management committee lacked the authority to remove them from
their positions.
But Bradburn has now left the PCB, having initially
joined as an assistant coach in 2018 before becoming head of high-performance
coaching in 2020. “Time to close the amazing chapter that has been
Pakistan cricket,” he posted on social media. “Three roles over five
years, I am proud of what’s been achieved and grateful to have worked with so
many outstanding players, coaches and staff.”
After a one-year attempt to split the responsibility,
he will begin his new role at Glamorgan next month, leading the Welsh county
across all formats. While Matthew Maynard resigned as red-ball coach at the end
of the previous season, Mark Alleyne, who served as white-ball coach but only
assumed leadership in the T20 Blast, is anticipated to stay on Bradburn’s
coaching staff.
Glamorgan did not perform well in any of the
competitions last year; they did not make it to the final rounds of either
white-ball competition and placed sixth in Division Two of the County
Championship. Selecting a new captain will be one of Bradburn’s first
priorities; David Lloyd, the current captain, will be joining Arthur in
Derbyshire this winter.
“With international experience and a passion for
developing players and staff, I am really looking forward to immersing myself
alongside our Glamorgan network of coaches to develop quality players within
our programmes. I will bring fresh eyes which I believe will be healthy for the
club.”
