After losing by 28 runs to England in the first Test
match of the series in Hyderabad, India fell three places to fifth place in the
World Test Championship (WTC) points table.
Prior to the Test, the two-time WTC finalists were
ranked second, behind Australia. However, the outcome saw them fall short of
Bangladesh, New Zealand, and South Africa, with their points percentage falling
from 54.16 to 43.33.
India also temporarily topped the table when they tied
the series 1-1 earlier this month in Cape Town after defeating South Africa in
two days. However, Australia’s two-day series sweep of Pakistan ended their
reign as the top team, and they lost their position.
In the five Test matches they have played so far in
the 2023–25 World Tour cycle, India has defeated South Africa and England once
each and drawn the other two.
Though they defeated India, West Indies’ thrilling
victory over Australia at the Gabba gave them a huge lift in their points
percentage, and as a result, England fell one spot.
West Indies overtook England to go seventh with their
first win of this cycle.
