[Saba Sports News] Match 4 of the Big Bash League 2023-24 between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades at Simonds Stadium in Geelong was mired in controversy and ultimately abandoned due to a dangerous pitch. The issue arose just 6.5 overs into the game, when a delivery from Will Sutherland to Quinton de Kock bounced unpredictably high.
Subsequent discussions between the umpires and team captains led to the decision to abandon the match. Reflecting on the incident, Perth Scorchers Captain Ashton Turner suggested the need for more adaptable playing conditions. Turner mentioned, as reported by cricket.com.au, the possibility of playing from one end of the pitch to enable the game to continue.
Additionally, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting proposed having trial overs on the pitch before the game starts. Current rules prohibit bowling or batting on the pitch before play, with only the captain and coach allowed to inspect it.
Peter Roach, Cricket Australia’s Head of Operations and Scheduling, acknowledged the importance of evolving playing conditions. He stated that at the end of each season, they review and consider suggestions for improvements. Roach highlighted recent changes, like the new rules for balls hitting the roof at Marvel Stadium, and expressed willingness to consider further modifications for upcoming seasons.
As a result of the game’s cancellation, both the Renegades and Scorchers were awarded one point each.
