[Saba Sports News] Mohammed Shami, initially benched during the early stages of the ODI World Cup 2023, made a dramatic comeback in the match against New Zealand. His performance was sensational, claiming 24 wickets in just seven games and becoming India’s top wicket-taker in the tournament’s history. This feat catapulted the 33-year-old to fame, drawing crowds to his farmhouse on December 10, with many eager to meet him. Shami’s Instagram post showcasing this gathered viral attention.
Despite being born in Uttar Pradesh, Shami has represented Bengal in domestic cricket. He recounted a disappointing experience with the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA), where he felt overlooked. Shami recalled an incident where his brother was told, “If you can move my chair, the boy will be selected,” highlighting the challenges he faced in UP cricket. This experience led to Shami’s decision to leave UP cricket.
Shami’s journey continued in Bengal, where he trained under Waqar Younis and later under Wasim Akram during his IPL stint with Kolkata Knight Riders. He also spent time at the Arun Lal Academy, adapting to different conditions and pitches, which significantly contributed to his development as a cricketer.
His move to Kolkata at the age of 14-15 marked a decisive step in his cricketing career, where he gained valuable experience and honed his skills.
“Then I moved to Calcutta at the age of 14-15. I talked to my coach. I became steadfast that I have to play. I was getting lot of experience. After three-four years, I went to Arun Lal academy. It was a cement pitch. The place for run-up was short. I was surprised. But still I bowled,” he shared.
