[Saba Sports News] Shaharyar Khan, the former head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), passed away on Saturday, March 23, in Lahore at the age of 89. Apart from his tenure as PCB Chairman, he served as Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary from 1990 to 1994.
Khan was elected unanimously by the board of governors to chair the PCB in accordance with the new constitution of the PCB 2014. He previously held the position from December 2003 to October 2006. Additionally, Khan had diplomatic roles as an ambassador to Jordan, the United Kingdom, and France. In 1994, he was appointed as the UN secretary-general’s special representative in Rwanda.
The PCB expressed deep sadness over Khan’s passing, highlighting his contributions during his two terms as Chairman. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also paid tribute to Khan’s extensive service, acknowledging his roles in protecting Pakistan’s diplomatic interests.
Foreign Secretary Muhammad Syrus Qazi mourned Khan’s death, praising him as one of Pakistan’s finest diplomats who left behind a significant legacy. Veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, who co-authored a book with Khan titled “Shadows Across the Playing Field,” expressed his condolences, noting Khan’s advocacy for good relations between India and Pakistan. Tharoor shared memories of Khan, emphasizing his fine character and intellect.
