[Saba Sports News] Bangladesh’s head coach, Chandika Hathurusingha, recently praised stand-in captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, suggesting he could be a long-term leadership option. Shanto led Bangladesh to their first ODI and T20I victories against New Zealand on foreign soil, further proving his capabilities by guiding the team to a Test win over New Zealand in Sylhet.
With uncertainties surrounding Shakib Al Hasan’s future availability, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) might consider a permanent captaincy candidate, and Shanto seems to be a strong contender.
Hathurusingha, speaking after the last T20I at Mount Maunganui, said, “The BCB will likely consider Shanto for long-term captaincy. It’s ultimately their decision, but Shanto has demonstrated his ability and leadership qualities convincingly.”
He also praised the positive atmosphere and the fearless approach of the players under Shanto’s leadership. “The team’s attitude, particularly this young group, was remarkable. They showed no fear and were eager to compete. Shanto’s leadership was exceptional; he was tactically astute and communicated clearly with the team, setting clear expectations,” Hathurusingha elaborated.
The head coach noted the improved environment in the dressing room, attributing it to Shanto’s clear communication and the team’s confidence in their ability to compete at a high level.
Hathurusingha was also impressed with Shoriful Islam’s impact across formats and leg spinner Rishad Hossain’s potential in white-ball cricket. Despite missing key players like Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain, Shoriful stepped up to lead the pace attack effectively throughout the series.
“Shoriful has been a standout performer in all formats recently. Just eight months ago, he wasn’t part of any format, and now he’s our leading bowler. Another positive development is Rishad. We’ve been in need of a leg spinner, and he’s shown great promise,” Hathurusingha added, highlighting the emerging talents in the team.
