[Saba Sports News] In Thursday’s 2024 IPL match, Shubman Gill, leading Gujarat Titans, notched his season’s first fifty with a stellar 89 not out off 48 balls against Punjab Kings in Ahmedabad. It marked his 19th IPL fifty and his inaugural one as Titans’ skipper, propelling his team to a formidable 199/4.
Gill’s innings was a display of resilience, especially after early wickets of Wriddhiman Saha and Kane Williamson, the latter making a 26-run contribution in his first game back since an injury in his debut match for the Titans last year against Chennai Super Kings.
Gill’s crucial partnership with Sai Sudharsan (33 runs) was pivotal, reaching his fifty in 31 balls before accelerating, ending with six fours and four sixes. Irfan Pathan and Yuvraj Singh, both former Indian all-rounders, praised Gill’s performance on X, commending his controlled play and comparing his style to Virat Kohli’s.
Gill’s effort has placed him fourth in the season’s top scorers with 164 runs from four matches, maintaining his form from the last season where he won the Orange Cap. The Titans aim for their third win of the season, following a victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad, while Punjab Kings seek a comeback with an away win in Ahmedabad.
