[Saba Sports News] This season, as the Los Angeles Lakers struggle and seek an offensive boost, fans anticipated general manager Rob Pelinka to actively pursue a trade. However, as January ends and the trade deadline approaches, the Lakers seem to be falling short in their efforts to acquire their top target.
Marc Stein reports that recent trade discussions between the Hawks and Lakers for ex-All-Star Dejounte Murray have been minimal. “One source briefed on the talks termed the idea of Murray landing with the Lakers before the deadline, as of this Sunday, as ‘unrealistic’,” Stein notes. This is partly due to D’Angelo Russell’s impressive performance lately.
The Lakers’ reluctance to trade Russell is not just due to his recent form, which has provided a much-needed lift. Russell’s performance is causing the team to reconsider, even though some skepticism remains regarding his consistency.
The Lakers had high hopes for this season with LeBron James and Anthony Davis in top form, aiming for a top-six finish in the West, which has not materialized. They had their sights set on Dejounte Murray, a point guard who fits their needs, especially for his defensive prowess, contrasting D’Angelo Russell.
Russell’s resurgence has been a pivotal factor recently. After a slump that nearly saw him dropped from the rotation, he has significantly improved, now averaging 17.1 points, 6.1 assists, and 2.7 rebounds per game. This uptick in form has made the Lakers hesitant to rush into any trade, especially if it involves Russell.
As things stand, the Lakers might keep Russell, potentially leading Murray to an unexpected destination.
