[Saba Sports News] Zimbabwe Cricket imposed four-month suspensions on national team players Wesley Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta for recreational drug use. The sanctions, announced on January 25, followed their admission of drug use at a disciplinary hearing the previous week. Both cricketers had tested positive for a banned recreational substance during a doping test in December. Additionally, they will face a three-month salary cut of 50%, starting January 2024.
Zimbabwe Cricket, adhering to a strict anti-drug policy, stated that the players’ actions were serious offenses that tarnished the organization and cricket’s reputation. However, the disciplinary committee acknowledged mitigating factors, noting both players expressed remorse and had begun efforts to quit the habit and detoxify.
In a related development, another Zimbabwean cricketer, Kevin Kasuza, has been suspended from all cricket activities pending a disciplinary hearing. Like his teammates, Kasuza failed an in-house dope test recently and faces a hearing for violating the board’s code of conduct.
