[Saba Sports News] The Toronto Raptors recently parted ways with one of their most significant players, Pascal Siakam, trading him to the Indiana Pacers after a complex and prolonged trade saga. Despite tensions, General Manager Masai Ujiri showed deep emotion while reflecting on discovering Siakam and his journey in Toronto.
Ujiri recalled Siakam’s unique path to the NBA, noting his African roots and unexpected rise to stardom. He highlighted Siakam’s background, originally planning to attend Pastoral School in Cameroon and only attending Basketball Without Borders to visit his sister in South Africa. Siakam’s trajectory from there to an NBA champion and All-Star was a source of pride for Ujiri, emphasizing Siakam’s active role in the Raptors’ success.
Over eight seasons with the Raptors, Siakam averaged 17.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists, earning accolades including the 2019 Most Improved Player award and contributing significantly to the Raptors’ 2019 championship team. Siakam’s selection in the 2016 Draft, once criticized for its risk, proved to be a triumph for Ujiri’s vision.
However, the relationship between Ujiri and Siakam experienced strain, leading to public disagreements. Ujiri acknowledged communication issues, apologizing to Siakam for not maintaining better contact, especially given their close relationship.
With Siakam’s move to Indiana, where he’ll join forces with Tyrese Haliburton, the Raptors are entering a new chapter, focusing on building around talents like Scottie Barnes. The trade also brought Immanuel Quickley and RJ Barrett to Toronto, along with potential future assets from the Pacers, signaling a fresh start for the franchise. However, the turbulent end to this championship-winning era remains a significant part of the Raptors’ history.
