[Saba Sports News] Monty Williams seems to have blocked his team’s attempt to trade guard Killian Hayes before the season started. According to James L. Edwards III from The Athletic, the Detroit Pistons were on the verge of dealing Hayes, but Williams, newly appointed as the Pistons’ head coach, requested an opportunity to develop Hayes himself.
Under Williams’ guidance in his debut season with the Pistons, Hayes initially received considerable playing time, averaging nearly 30 minutes per game. However, Williams’ preference for Hayes, even over Jaden Ivey, reportedly caused some internal discontent within the team.
Lately, Hayes’ role has diminished, with Ivey taking precedence in the lineup, and Hayes did not play in the recent game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Despite being a capable defender, Hayes, at 22, has been criticized for his low basketball IQ, poor shot selection, and is viewed as better suited for a backup role.
Although Williams, as head coach, does not formally participate in basketball operations decisions—a role held by GM Troy Weaver—his significant contract with the Pistons suggests he wields some influence over team decisions. With the trade deadline on February 8 approaching and the Pistons struggling with the league’s worst record at 6-41, Williams might reconsider his stance on Hayes, allowing the team to explore trading options again.
