[Saba Sports News] The New Orleans Pelicans included significant protections in Zion Williamson’s contract, a recent report by Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic reveals. Due to Williamson missing over 22 games last season, a clause has activated, changing the final three years of his contract to non-guaranteed.
This shift allows the Pelicans to potentially release Williamson after the 2024-25 season without financial consequences. Additionally, Williamson’s guaranteed salary for 2024-25 could decrease if he misses substantial time this year, though he can regain these guarantees by meeting game appearance and weight criteria.
The contract, agreed upon in summer 2022, originally guaranteed Williamson $197 million. It features unique stipulations, including regular weight and body fat checkups, and additional clauses related to his recurring right foot issues.
Despite being a dominant force and a multiple-time All-Star, Williamson’s health and fitness have been concerns, limiting him to 52 games over three seasons. The contract’s complexities reflect these concerns and give the Pelicans flexibility. Rumors of the Pelicans considering a future without Williamson have surfaced, and the altered contract terms could facilitate this.
