[Saba Sports News] Former India and current Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni is nearing the twilight of his remarkable career, highlighted by leading CSK to their fifth Indian Premier League title last season. At 42 years old, Dhoni is expected to retire after the upcoming IPL season. Despite a heavily strapped left knee, Dhoni displayed unwavering determination during IPL 2023, undergoing rehabilitation to recover from his injury.
Having relinquished captaincy for the 2022 IPL season, CSK endured a dismal performance, prompting Dhoni to reclaim the leadership role from Ravindra Jadeja. Former Indian and ex-CSK player Suresh Raina suggested Ruturaj Gaikwad as a potential future captain for CSK, emphasizing Dhoni’s potential role as a mentor even after stepping down.
Raina expressed his desire for Dhoni to continue playing for another five years, or at least 2-3 more years. Following their victory in IPL 2023, Dhoni referred to the 2024 season as a “gift” to fans, with CSK’s batting coach Mike Hussey noting Dhoni’s impressive form in training. Raina emphasized the importance of this season for CSK, particularly in selecting Dhoni’s deputy, who may assume leadership responsibilities in the future.
