[Saba Sports News] Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend MS Dhoni’s decision to relinquish the captaincy has stirred emotions within the franchise. Stephen Fleming, the team’s coach, shed light on the emotional send-off and the well-planned succession plan in place.
“There was a lot of emotions (when Dhoni broke the news),” Fleming said as quoted. “A whole lot of tears. There wasn’t a dry eye in the dressing room. Everyone was moved. Last time (when CSK changed the captain) we weren’t as prepared for MS to move and for a change in leadership.”
Fleming alludes to the previous captaincy change in CSK, which might have been more abrupt and led to a sense of unpreparedness. However, this time around, things seem different.
“Well, there’s always a little bit of shock around it,” Fleming acknowledged. “But going back to two years ago, we’re much more conditioned this time. And, the players handled it very well. Just as the captain, ex-captain handled it well and in announcing it to the team.”
Fleming’s words suggest that both Dhoni and the team have learned from the past transition and have ensured a smoother handover this time. He commends the players for their composure and Dhoni for his graceful exit strategy.
Delving deeper into Dhoni’s decision, Fleming explained the strategic thinking behind it. “It was MS Dhoni’s call with a lot of consideration looking at the future. The timing was good. It’ll be a grooming process for Ruturaj (Gaikwad). We weren’t ready to move away from MS in 2022. Dhoni has a good sense of the game, but we want to develop the young players for the role. We are well prepared this time.”
Fleming highlights Dhoni’s foresight in stepping down. With Dhoni’s still there as a player and a well-prepared team, the baton is passed to Gaikwad, marking a new chapter for the Chennai Super Kings.
CSK will play the season-opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore on March 22 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
