[Saba Sports News] Victor Wembanyama is making waves in his debut season, despite playing for the struggling San Antonio Spurs. The significance of team losses outweighs his individual milestones for the young center.
In a recent game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Wembanyama notched a 5×5 game, amassing 27 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, five blocks, and five steals, despite a 123-118 defeat. This remarkable feat positioned him alongside Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history to achieve five blocks and five steals in consecutive games.
However, Wembanyama’s reaction to his achievement was measured, focusing on the context of the game’s outcome rather than the achievement itself. When questioned about equating Jordan’s record, he pondered if Jordan’s achievements came within the context of victories, underlining his belief that accomplishments feel diminished in the shadow of a loss.
“I wonder if he did it in wins, not losses. To me, it’s secondary,” Wembanyama said. “Hopefully, in the future, we can look back and think this is a good performance. As of today, I can’t be satisfied with a loss.”
Wembanyama’s priority is clear: he values team success over personal accolades. With the Spurs’ record falling to 11-46 following the loss, the young star’s frustration is palpable. Yet, given Wembanyama’s evident talent, there’s optimism that he will become the cornerstone of a more competitive Spurs team. It’s worth noting that Jordan’s similar achievements occurred during victories in February 1987, confirming Wembanyama’s conjecture.
