[Saba Sports News] In a surprising turn of events, MS Dhoni made the unexpected decision to step down as captain of the Chennai Super Kings just before the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) opener, passing the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The defending champions, CSK, are set to kick off the season against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on March 22 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
Ahead of this highly-anticipated match, former RCB player and South African cricket legend AB de Villiers shared his thoughts on Dhoni’s move, expressing his discontent with the timing of the decision, deeming it a “major misstep.”
“I must say, I believe MS Dhoni stepping down as captain is a significant error,” remarked De Villiers.
With Dhoni’s captaincy handover, it marks the end of the 42-year-old’s extensive tenure as CSK skipper. Having been appointed as captain since the tournament’s inception in 2008, Dhoni briefly stepped aside from the role in 2022, with Ravindra Jadeja taking over.
However, after some disappointing performances, Jadeja relinquished the captaincy mid-season, leading Dhoni to resume his leadership role. Under his guidance, CSK secured their fifth IPL title in the previous season.
While many speculated that the title-winning campaign would mark Dhoni’s farewell season, he pledged to return if his physical condition permitted. Now, the 2011 World Cup-winning captain is gearing up for potentially his final IPL season with CSK.
Dhoni has an impressive record as CSK captain, having led the team in 235 matches, securing titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023. His leadership also saw Chennai reach the IPL final a record 10 times, including a remarkable four consecutive appearances from 2010 to 2013.
Additionally, Dhoni captained the Rising Pune Supergiant for 14 matches in 2016 and 2017 during CSK’s suspension due to their owners’ involvement in the 2013 IPL betting scandal.
