[Saba Sports News] Excitement mounts within the cricketing community as the seventeenth edition of the IPL approaches, promising a revival of enthusiasm for the 20-over format. Amidst the buzz surrounding the tournament – including discussions on injuries, player withdrawals, and practice camps – a significant development is set to elevate the anticipation for the prestigious league.
Reported by ESPNcricinfo, the upcoming IPL season will debut the Smart Replay System, aiming to enhance decision-making speed and accuracy. This revamped setup will see TV umpires and Hawk-Eye operators collaborating closely in a shared workspace, facilitated by additional split screens, improved frame rates, and streamlined processes.
Until IPL 2023, Hawk-Eye cameras were primarily utilized for ball-tracking and Ultra Edge technology. However, with the introduction of the Smart Replay System, TV umpires will gain access to enhanced visuals, including synchronized split-screen images for crucial decisions like boundary calls and stumpings.
In the event of contentious overthrows, the system will provide clarity by revealing whether the batter completed a run before the throw. For stumpings, a tri-vision approach combining side-on and front-on camera footage will refine decision-making, while catches near the turf will be assessed through a comprehensive single-frame display from both frontal and lateral perspectives.
The IPL 2024 season is set to kick off on March 22, featuring a highly-anticipated opener between the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
