[Saba Sports News] Australia head coach Andrew McDonald put his faith on Mitchell Marsh’s leadership acumen, pinning him as the side’s captain for the T20 World Cup 2024.
Marsh, who has emerged as Australia’s biggest match-winner across formats lately, took over the T20I captaincy on an interim basis after Aaron Finch vacated the position.
Marsh has become a regular in all three formats for Australia. When he skipped a T20I, Matthew Wade filled in for him in the leadership role. Pat Cummins, who recently led Australia to the ODI World Cup 2023 trophy, is another prospect for the captaincy role in the biennial tournament.
However, McDonald has backed Marsh to continue as the T20I captain, expressing his satisfaction with how the latter has led Australia. In the last 12 months, Marsh has taken Australia T20I series wins against South Africa, New Zealand and the West Indies.
“I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas,” McDonald said as quoted.
“We’re happy and comfortable with the way he’s been able to operate with that T20 team. We think he’s the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course,” he added.
Notably, Australia now have no T20I planned before the World Cup. They will next play a T20I on June 6 in the World Cup fixture versus Oman in Barbados.
