[Saba Sports News] Sri Lanka is set to have new captains for each format in 2024, with Dhananjaya de Silva appointed as the Test skipper. This decision follows the recent appointments of Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga as leaders of the ODI and T20I sides, respectively.
Dhananjaya de Silva, aged 32, will become the 18th different player to captain Sri Lanka in men’s Tests when he leads the team in the one-off Test against Afghanistan. He takes over the captaincy from Dimuth Karunaratne, who led the team in 30 Tests from 2019 to 2023, with a record of 12 wins, 12 losses, and 6 draws.
Karunaratne’s captaincy began with a historic series win in South Africa, and he brought a sense of stability to the team during a period of transition in Sri Lankan cricket. His leadership also saw an improvement in his batting performance, with an average of nearly 50, compared to his career average of 40.93.
