Notably, the Indian quick last played in the ODI World Cup 2023 where India lost the final to Australia. Despite the ankle issues, he took 24 wickets in the tournament, the most by a bowler.
Shami was then ruled out of the Test series against South Africa and England. He will also miss the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 with his absence being a big blow for Gujarat Titans.
The speedster is racing against time to get fit for the T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled in June in the Carribbean and the USA.
