[Saba Sports News] In an unexpected turn of events at the 2023 World Cup, the Indian cricket team faces a challenge due to the absence of a sixth bowling option, a void created by Hardik Pandya’s unfortunate injury. Head coach Rahul Dravid, in a light-hearted manner, playfully labeled Virat Kohli as a “wrong-footed inswinger menace” and hinted at the possibility of Kohli contributing as a bowler if the need arises.
Before the World Cup commenced, Captain Rohit Sharma had hinted that both he and Kohli could step up as bowlers if required. This hint became a reality when Kohli bowled three crucial overs, completing Pandya’s over, after Pandya got injured during the match against Bangladesh. However, Kohli hasn’t bowled since that instance.
During a press conference held in Bengaluru, Dravid acknowledged the absence of an additional bowling option and expressed confidence in Kohli’s capability to step in when necessary. He lightened the mood by making comments about Kohli’s bowling action, which has always intrigued cricket enthusiasts.
Dravid humorously remarked, “Yes, we may lack a designated sixth bowling option, but we do have a ‘wrong-footed inswinger menace’ whom we can rely on for a few overs. He came close to bowling in the last game, with the crowd urging him on.”
With Pandya unavailable, Suryakumar Yadav has been playing the role of a specialist batter at number 6. While India bolstered their bowling lineup by bringing in Mohammed Shami in place of Shardul Thakur, the team still lacks a dependable sixth bowler in case of an emergency.
As Dravid pointed out, Kohli may be called upon to contribute with the ball, especially on days when one of the main bowlers is off their game. Despite this challenge, India’s unbeaten record in the tournament, winning all seven ODIs, underscores their status as a formidable contender. South Africa, with six wins under their belt, also poses a strong challenge.
Cricket enthusiasts can anticipate an epic showdown between the two teams in Kolkata on November 5 as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
