[Saba Sports News] The San Antonio Spurs, where Mike Budenholzer once served as an assistant coach, have now brought in one of his former players. On Monday, the Spurs announced the signing of Mamadi Diakite, an ex-Milwaukee Bucks forward, to a two-way contract.
At 26 years old, Diakite was part of the Bucks’ 2021 NBA championship team. Despite only playing in 21 games (including both the regular season and playoffs) for Milwaukee, he was a noticeable figure on the bench, known for his blonde-dyed hair. Notably, Diakite was the first to join Giannis Antetokounmpo in celebration after Antetokounmpo’s critical alley-oop dunk from Jrue Holiday in Game 5 of the 2021 Finals.
A former standout at Virginia in college, Diakite has since played for Oklahoma City and Cleveland after his tenure in Milwaukee. His NBA career averages stand at 3.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game in limited playing time. His addition to the Spurs could bolster their frontcourt, especially following the recent loss of a key big man to a season-ending ACL injury.
