[Saba Sports News] It has not been a long time since the ODI World Cup 2023 finished. However, the teams have already begun their preparations for the upcoming ICC event, which is the T20 World Cup 2024.
The tournament will run from June 1 to June 29 in the Caribbean and the USA, and comprises of 20 teams. Four groups of five sides each have been drawn by the ICC with India placed alongside Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and the USA.
All the participating teams are allowed to submit the list of their provisional squads to the ICC by May 1, exactly a month before the completion kicks off. They can make changes and must submit a final list by May 25. Any change which a team plans to make thereafter will require the approval of ICC’s technical committee.
As for India, they will play their final T20I series before the tournament against Afghanistan. Rohit Sharma has been selected as the captain for that bilateral assignment, while Virat Kohli too is making his comeback to T20I set-up after more than a year.
After the Afghanistan series, the performance of the players will be assessed in the nearing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), which will commence on March 23, as reported. Before India’s final World Cup squad gets announced, the IPL 2024 will be over and therefore, the Indian team management will have enough sample size at their hands to judge how a player fared in the tournament.
“We have a fair idea about the squad. But of course, IPL will be the one. We have to pick the squad based on form and not on individual performances in the past. Everyone is available for selection until then. It is up to the selectors whether Rohit and Virat will be in the squad. They are available for selection in T20Is,” a senior BCCI official said as quoted by InsideSport.
